Darley
freshman Shaft posted his first stakes-winner when two year-old gelding Magic
Shaft took out the Listed Reid and Harrison Slipper at Matamata in New Zealand on
Saturday.
Placed in three previous starts, the John Sargent trained gelding was overdue
to record a win and did so in style, surging clear to snare the 1200 metre
feature by three-quarters of a length.
Magic Shaft was a $60,000 purchase for his trainer from the Te Mania
Thoroughbreds draft at the 2011 NZB Select Yearling Sale and was a successful
pinhook having been originally purchased for $26,000 from the Chatsworth Park
draft at the Inglis Select Weanling Sale.
He is one of three winners, but the first stakes-winner from the Marauding mare
Adaptable Lass, a grand-daughter of West Australian Oaks winner Adaptable.
A Group II STC Silver Slipper winner by Flying Spur, Shaft (pictured) is the sire of four
winners from 10 runners and stands at a fee of $7,700.
