Noted
barrier rogue Callanish returned from a spell to win impressively at Sandown on
Wednesday, the talented son of Fastnet Rock causing punters a few anxious
moments when he deliberated on whether to enter the gates, but all's well that
ends well.
The Mick Price trained three year old won easily at his only previous start at
Cranbourne in December, but has had issues with his barrier manners since then
that have kept him out of competition.
Fitted with a barrier blanket and carried into the gates by attendants,
Callanish jumped well for Dale Smith, travelled forward to be on the pace and
then kicked clear in the straight to win the 1400 metre Ratings 72 event by more
than two lengths.
A $320,000 purchase from the Curraghmore Stud draft at the 2010 NZB Premier
Yearling Sale for his trainer, Callanish is a half-brother to Group III winner
Dancing Daggers and is from Dancing Doll, who comes from the family of Group I
winners Blevic, Universal Prince and Universal Queen.
Fastnet Rock (pictured) has been in hot form at the sales this week, his offspring selling
for up to $500,000 at the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale.
