High rolling stallion Snitzel was represented by his 18thstakes-winner when the Robbie Laing-trained Golconda blitzed her rivals in Saturday's
Listed Desiree Gill Tribute Stakes (1000m) at Caulfield.
The 2yo filly was luckless at her career debut when fourth
to another Snitzel filly, Oakleigh Girl, in the Listed 7 News Plate at
Flemington after slipping and coming from well back in the field.
Glen Boss had the short-priced favourite away quickly,
travelling smoothly outside Feels Like Home before kicking clear to win by
three-lengths from All Sewn Up (Choisir) with Heavy (Domesday) one and a
quarter lengths back in third.
"She should have probably run second at Flemington, her
sectionals were terrific but gave them too a big a start, said winning trainer
Robbie Laing.
"She bounced well today was up outside an unraced one (Feels
Like Home) and came away and won easily."
Laing said a decision would be made later whether Golconda
heads to the Magic Millions in January or takes a path to the Blue Diamond.
"It's probably more prestigious to be winning Blue Diamonds so
that's a thing we're going to have to weigh up, do we go to Queensland, may be
40 Celsius, might melt, or do we give her a little breather and go Blue Diamond
(Stakes), Bloodhorse Breeders (Stakes) or something like that.
Golconda is a half-sister to Sermon (Octagonal) who Laing
trained to win the Listed Cranbourne Cup but her purchase was fortuitous.
"She was a strange purchase because I didn't even know she
was in the catalogue," Laing revealed
"I bought one earlier in the sale and I was wandering around
and I thought gee that's a classy looking horse. It was a half-brother to
Sermon by a stallion that was on fire.
"Neville Parnham, who was an underbider on Boomwaa, was the
under-bidder on her so he must be a good judge."
With two winners from the two juveniles he has started this
season, Laing said there may be better to come.
"The old story I've got one better at home," Laing said.
"The horse that was actually beating her and Boomwaa with a
leg in the air is a colt by Denman He had a slight injury but he will be back
in the stable in a month's time. He's outstanding."
That colt's name is Dezannam.
Laing had purchased Golconda for $145,000 out of the Baramul Stud consignment at the Adelaide Magic Millions Yearling sale.
She is the seventh live foal of the Group II Kewney Stakes Eureka
Jewel (Semipalatinsk)
Gerry Harvey's Broombee Stud secured Eureka Jewel, in foal
to Rory's Jester, for $300,000 at the 1998 Easter Broodmare Sale.
Harvey culled Eureka Jewel in 2012 at the Magic Millions
National Broodmare sale. In foal to Bel Danoro she made just $750 to the bid of
Lyndhurst Stud Farm. She was covered by Drumbeats last year but failed to
conceive.
