Artie Schiller Filly Opens Stakes Account

Mark Smith - Saturday November 16
Out of the winner's stall since winning a pair of two-year-old races at Cranbourne and Sandown in March, Artie Schiller (USA) filly Mezeray Miss opened her stakes account in Saturday's Listed City Of Greater Dandenong Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield.

Ridden by Damian Lane, Mezeray Miss got the better of a stubborn Minaj by a half-head with 2 ¼ lengths to Patricia Dawn in third.

Trainer Matt Laurie said the 3yo filly has an easier option in a 1200-metre race at Moonee Valley next week but elected to give her a shot at black-type.

"She'd been doing well over 10000 and 1100 metres and we just wanted her ridden a little more quietly to see that she finishes strong. I was surprised that she was so strong late after the run she had so close to the speed."

Laurie felt the daughter of Artie Schiller had a genuine excuse for her last start failure at Flemington.

"Froggy (Newitt) came back and said she just hated the hard track so we were willing to put a line through that," Laurie said.

"It's great to get a stakes win for her owners and hopefully she can add to it later on."

A $65,000 purchase by her trainer from the Huntsworth Stud consignment at the 2012 Inglis Classic Yearling sale, Mezeray Miss is the fourth foal of winning Quest For Fame (GB) mare Aqualuna a half-sister to the stakes-placed Twain the dam of Down Town (Scenic) a multiple stakes-winner in Hong Kong.

It's the family of champion stallion Centaine.

Aqualuna has a 2yo Domesday filly named Atlantis but her Hard Spun (USA) foal died and she missed to Beneteau last year.

Mezeray Miss becomes the 20th stakes-winner for Emirate Park Stud's Artie Schiller (USA) who is also enjoying a fine run of success in America with a recent Grade 1 winning juveniles Miss Conquestadory and We Miss Artie.
