After sharing the spoils at his career debut, Denman gelding
Pinch River gave supporters no concerns at Eagle Farm on Saturday when the odd-on
favourite romped home by six lengths in the Brisclean Handicap (1000m).
Trainer Robert Heathcote heaped praise on Pinch River and
was even given to comparing him favourably with stable star Buffering.
"At the same stage of their careers this guy is more
professional in his attitude to racing than Buffering," Heathcote told AAP.
"He's a lovely little horse and pretty much from day one he's surprised me with everything he's done. "Every task we've set him, he's passed."
First season sire Denman can do no wrong at the moment and
he received further recognition with a colt that has yet to make a start.
When the Robbie Laing-trained Golconda blitzed her rivals in
the Listed Desiree Gill Tribute Stakes (1000m) at Caulfield, Laing said she could
not hold a candle to a Denman colt he had in the stable.
"The horse that was actually beating her and Boomwaa
with a leg in the air is a colt by Denman (named Dezannam)," Laing said. He had
a slight injury but he will be back in the stable in a month's time. He's
outstanding."
An $46,000 pinhook for Musk Creek Farm at the Inglis Easter Weanling
Sale, Pinch River made $85,000 to the bid of Paul Willets at the Magic Millions
Yearling sale. He is the third foal of the winning Catbird mare Avenue Girl
whose granddam Derly (FR) was a half-sister to the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe
heroine Detroit, the dam of multiple Group 1 winner and successful stallion
Carnegie.
Denman sired the Listed Breeders' Plate winner Law and
Brisbane metropolitan winner Grapevine on the opening day of the season for 2-year
olds, while Piacenza was a luckless third in the Listed Debutant Stakes at
Caulfield last month.
An incredible result as the four are Denman's only starters
to date.
