Teofilo Colt Tops Strong Tassie MM Sale

Media Release - Thursday February 13
A cracking colt by Teofilo (IRE) has topped a successful day's trade at the Magic Millions Tasmanian Yearling Sale in Launceston today.

Selling for a record equalling price of $85,000, the colt was the highlight sale on a day where $1 million was traded on 76 lots sold.

Teofilo colt from Palatine HillThe average price of $13,158 was up on last year's sale, while the clearance rate of 87.4% was a record for the auction.

The successful buyer of the day's top selling lot, Darren Weir, said the colt was the perfect fit to his in form stable.

"He's a very athletic colt and looks a great prospect," Weir said. "He had a lot going for him."

"I trained the mother and have had some good success with the family particularly with Sublimity (the dam's half sister)," he added.

Weir is a regular at the Tasmanian Yearling Sale and considering his dominance in Melbourne racing this season it was great to see him making his presence felt in Launceston again.

The Teofilo colt, catalogued as Lot 48, is the fifth foal of the Melbourne winning Palace Music mare Palatine Hill - a winner of four races and half sister to stakes winners Rather Grand and Sublimity.

Jenny Watson of Macleay Thoroughbred Stud at Westwood was all smiles after the sale of the colt.

"I couldn't be happier," Watson said. "He was a lovely colt and we were hoping for a great result. We certainly got one and he's going to every chance heading to a leading stable as well."

"It's been a great sale all round and we've sold all the yearlings we had entered," she added.

The second top price for the sale and the highest paid for a filly, was the $52,500 given by First Light Racing in association with Paul Willetts and the Ellerton/Zahra Racing team for the three quarter sister to Lady Lynette.

The third top seller of the day was the Reward for Effort-Shallot filly from Armidale Stud, who sold to Denise Martin's Star Thoroughbreds for $50,000.

"It's been a very rewarding sale today on a lot of levels," Magic Millions Managing Director Vin Cox noted.

"To have an equal record priced lot at $85,000 was a great highlight of the day."

"And the participation of mainland China on the day was also tremendous with 15 lots sold. It was very exciting to have them operating "

Cox said the attention of Magic Millions would now swing west for the Magic Millions raceday at Ascot on Saturday before the Perth Yearling Sale on Tuesday and Wednesday.
