A six
length win for a filly with Oaks aspirations and a debut win for a half-brother
to an Oaks winner are our two to watch from Geelong on Sunday.
Blue-blooded Street Cry (IRE) filly Star Fashion contested several of the
better fillies races during the spring for the David Hayes stable and was
beaten a nose when second in the Group II VRC Manifold Stakes over a mile.
Despite her obvious ability she was a maiden until today when she resumed from
a spell and gave nothing else a chance when bolting away to win over 1440
metres by six lengths as a hot favourite with Michael Rodd in the saddle.
Star Fashion was a $330,000 Inglis Easter purchase from the Brooklyn Lodge
draft and is a half-sister to Classy Fashion being the third winner from former
Hayes stable star Elegant Fashion, who won several Group II events in Melbourne
before being transferred to Hong Kong where she won the Hong Kong Derby HK Gr 1
against the colts.
On pedigree, Star Fashion looms as an obvious contender for all the upcoming
Oaks events for three year-old fillies.
Elegant Fashion has no yearling for the sales this year, but did have a
Medaglia D'Oro (USA) filly last spring and was subsequently covered by High
Chaparral (IRE).
Astute trainer Sam Pritchard-Gordon unearthed a promising three year old in
Clemo, who won the previous maiden over 1140 metres.
A three year-old half-brother by California Dane to Group I AJC Australian Oaks
winner Once Were Wild, Clemo was sent out favourite and was always travelling
well before forging clear to win by two and a half lengths.
A modest $45,000 Magic Millions purchase from the Evergreen Stud Farm for his
trainer, Clemo runs for a large group of owners including Rachel Clements, who
named the horse in memory of her late husband Paul, who died in 2011 at age 36.
He carries colours designed by her children Lily and Jack which include a rainbow
that appeared on the day he died.
Bred by John Muir's Milburn Creek, Clemo is the sixth winner from six foals to
race from Wildesong, whose current yearling, a colt by Denman will be offered
by Milburn Creek as Lot 283 at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.
Wildesong had a filly by Smart Missile last spring and is now in foal to
Bernardini (USA).
