Australian Oaks Goes to New Zealand

Mark Smith - Saturday April 19
A luckless fourth in the Group 1 Vinery Stakes, NZ Derby runner-up Rising Romance was rewarded with a belated Group 1 success in Saturday's $1 million Group Seven News Australian Oaks (2400m) at Randwick.

James McDonald was scathing of his own ride in the Vinery but he more than made up for it in the Oaks with a peach of ride.

The Donna Logan-trained filly defeated Zanbagh (Bernardini) by a length with Vinery Stakes heroine Lucia Valentina (Savabeel) a fast finishing third.

Winner of the Group II Royal Stakes at Ellerslie, Rising Romance moves her overall record to 4 wins, 2 seconds and1third from 10 starts for earnings of $921,372.

"He (McDonald) told me we'd bounce back here and it was a top ride," Logan said.

"She's settled in really well over here and loves it, like I do.

"It's great for our industry these Kiwi-bred fillies come over here and win. We come here because the racing is so good and the prizemoney is just fantastic."

"To be here in Sydney, Championship time it's just the best, the ultimate."

"She's a very robust filly that copes with everything we throw at her."

A homebred for the Carter family, Rising Romance is a daughter of Hussonet's Group 1 winning half-brother Ekraar (USA) (Red Ransom) out of the winning Postponed mare Post Romance a daughter of the stakes-placed Something Wicked (Sackford) a sister to Group 1 Flight Stakes and Group 1 Queensland Oaks winner A Little Kiss.

Post Romance has an unraced 2yo brother to Rising Romance and was not covered in 2012.
