More Joyous Brave in Tristarc
Mark Smith - Saturday, 15 October 2011

Big hearted mare More Joyous kept her record of never been beaten in a race restricted to her own sex intact by edging out a stubborn Sister Madly in Saturday's Group 2 D'Urban Tristarc Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield.

The Queen of Sydney racing too her record to a remarkable 15 wins and 2 thirds from 15 starts while bankrolling $2,380,250 for owner/breeder John Singleton.

While trainer Gai Waterhouse was her usual effervescent self, the 5yo mares jockey, Nash Rawiller, was considerable more circumspect on the merit of the win.

The race was delayed when More Joyous (More Than Ready)(pictured Taron Clarke Photography)  had to be resaddled.

"Steve (Dennett) wasn't really happy with the saddle when he first put it on her," Rawiller said. "You don't send the horse around if the gear is not right.

"She did a good job. She's not going as well as she was normally when I ride her. She's getting a little bit older.

"She is just a very good mare with a big heart at the moment and certainly she doesn't feel like she's right there."

Not surprisingly Waterhouse was more upbeat.

"She is outstanding this mare, she is only second-up and a few things went wrong before the race," Waterhouse said.

"Sister Madly had the break on us and it didn't look like we were going to catch her but her true star quality came through.

The Group I Myer Classic (1600m) at Flemington on Derby day is the immediate target for More Joyous.

"She should be able to win that. It's lovely to have a mare as good as her," Waterhouse said.

A homebred for John Singleton's Strawberry Hill Stud, More Joyous is the second foal of AJC Oaks (G1) winner Sunday Joy, daughter of the legendry Sunday Silence out of the Queensland Oaks (G1) winner Joie Denise (Danehill).

Sunday Joy missed to More Than Ready (USA) last season however she has a yearling sister to More Joyous and a 2yo colt by Redoute's Choice named Laughing Lad.
