First Win for Crystal Lily Bro
Tara Madgwick - Friday, 18 November 2011

Three year-old gelding Crystal Reef may never be as talented as his Golden Slipper winning half-sister Crystal Lily, but he was good enough to win at Cranbourne on Friday as a well backed favourite.

Having his fourth race start, the Matt Ellerton and Simon Zahra trained son of Danerich took full advantage of barrier one to scoot through and lead on the fence before kicking strongly in the straight to win the 1200 maiden by the best part of a length.

Winning rider Chris Symons was able to get the best from Crystal Reef, who was beaten into second at Ararat at his previous start as a short priced favourite.

"He was disappointing at Ararat, but he had the blinkers on today," Symons said.

"He'll keep improving from here."

A homebred for Contract Racing, Crystal Reef is the ninth winner from nine foals to race for Crystal Snip, who has been an outstanding producer with three of her winners the stakes-winners Crystal Lily (pictured), Amaethon and Crystal Wit, while another daughter Crystal Sprite is the dam of Group II winner Carrara.

She has a two year-old colt by Hard Spun (USA) called Crystal Web, a yearling full sister to the ill-fated Crystal Lily and sadly lost another foal by Stratum this spring.
