Catbird's Monton Captures Villiers
Mark Smith - Saturday, 17 December 2011

Rejuvenated gelding Monton overcame a torrid run to earn his second consecutive stakes victory in Saturday's Group 2 $175,000 Inglis Villiers Stakes (1600m) at Warwick Farm.

A last start winner of the Listed Festival Stakes at Rosehill, the Ron Quinton trainee was caught three wide the trip before edging clear to win by one and a quarter lengths from Kontiki Park (Thorn Park) with king Lionheart (Al Maher) a short-head back in third (picture Steve Hart).

Champion jockey Hugh Bowman, a past Ron Quinton apprentice, replaced Quinton's current star apprentice Sam Clipperton on Monton.

"It means a lot," Bowman said.

"Samantha Miss in Melbourne for Kris Lees, a great friend, and Racing To Win with John O'Shea, a great friend too.

"This is up there with those two because Ronny's a great friend and a great mentor.

"It's great that he's got a good horse again and I'm delighted to be on it."

"I thought I can't win going back and I can't win driving him forward," he said. "I didn't get in, I just had to rate him and the horse did it the hard way.

"When you've got a horse and they're in a nice rhythm I'd rather be wide than on the fence because you're not going to run into any trouble."

Quinton was equally delighted to give his former star pupil another stakes win.

"This was a good win as he was apprenticed to me and we have remained very close friends, "Quinton said.

"The horse has gone the right way. He remained calm and cool and he was good. He did not have a lot of luck in the running, but he overcame it."

" Stephen Jefferies has done a lot of work with this horse and deserves a lot of the credit, plus my other staff, but I think he has turned the corner again."

Quinton said that Monton will now be rested with the Group 1 Doncaster Handicap his main goal in the autumn.

Bred by Reg Kemister, Monton was consigned by Brooklyn Lodge to the second session of 2008 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling sale where he was knocked down to David Lamond for $50,000.

He is the first live foal of the Marauding mare Dynamic Flyer whose troubled breeding history saw her sell for just $2,500 at the 2008 Easter Broodmare sale.

Monton was her only foal in her first six seasons at stud and Dynamic Flyer was knocked down for just $2,500. The Sydney winning mare is out of the VATC One Thousand Guineas (G1) heroine Bianco Flyer (Godswalk) herself a daughter of the Perth Cup (G1) heroine Bianco Lady (Rangong).

In 2009 Dynamic Flyer produced a colt by Ustinov. The following year she dropped a filly foal by Snitzel before being covered by High Chaparral (Ire) last December.

Golden Slipper hero Catbird died at Yarraman Park in 2007 after seven seasons at stud. He sired 22 stakes winners including three Group 1 winners.
