Ryan chasing another Millions berth with Angel Of Mercy
Clinton Payne - Monday, 2 January 2012

Trainer Gerald Ryan is banking on a few withdrawals to give him a shot at taking home the two Magic Millions majors on Saturday week after Angel Of Mercy disposed of her rivals in great fashion to win the Schweppes Maiden Plate (1300m) at Warwick Farm on Monday.

The $26,000 first place prizemoney at Warwick Farm took Angel Of Mercy's career earnings to $46,000, putting the daughter of Hussonet closer to a start in the $1 million Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (1400m) at the Gold Coast.

"If we can get a run we'll go," Ryan said. "I did the sums the other day and she's probably around 33rd now but there are a few ahead of us that aren't going so there's still hope.

"If we don't get a run we might go for the fillies and mares race, 1300 [metres]. We'll play it by ear."

If Angel Of Mercy does secure a start in the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas, Ryan will attempt to join one other trainer that has done the two and three-year-old double.

Hall Of Fame trainer Gai Waterhouse is the only trainer that has achieved the feat in 2001 when Excellerator won the Magic Millions 2YO Classic and Ha Ha took home the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas.

Angel Of Mercy is aiming to join last Saturday's impressive Rosehill winner Amorino, who will be the stable's hope in the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) on January 14.

Ryan said Angel Of Mercy has always promised him plenty and the ease with which she defeated Miss Milanese and Mycup Runneth Over at Warwick Farm was no surprise.

"She's a filly I've always had a huge opinion of and I think she's a group filly," he said. "She's definitely a nice filly that's going places."

The victory also ended a Sydney metropolitan run of outs for winning jockey Brenton Avdulla of 59 rides.

The on-course market: Angel Of Mercy opened short at $2.10 and eased throughout to start a $3 equal favourite. Miss Milanese opened on-course at $2.70, eased to $3.40 before firming into start the equal top elect at $3 while Mycup Runneth Over drifted from $13 to $20. Outside the placegetters, Polygamist was a decent go at longer odds, firming from $20 to $11 while Exultation drifted from $5.50 to $9 then he firmed to start $8. The on-course market closed at 113 percent.
