Hayes and Dunn eyeing another Blue Diamond
Brad Waters - Saturday, 4 February 2012

Lethal Blue Diamond combination of jockey Dwayne Dunn and trainer David Hayes are set to reunite in the 2012 edition of the race after Mama's Choice's terrific win in Saturday's Listed Chairman's Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield.

Dunn and Hayes combined for a hat-trick of Blue Diamond wins with Nadeem (2006), Sleek Chassis (2007) and Reaan (2008) before the duo went their separate ways in 2009. Dunn also won the Blue Diamond Stakes in 2005 on the Mark Kavanagh-trained Undoubtedly.

"I've had six goes for four wins and two thirds so it would be nice to put another one up there," Dunn said.

Mama's Choice burst into Group I Blue Diamond calculations after running on strongly from the tail of the field to beat the pre-post favourite for the $1 million event, the Tony McEvoy-trained Jimando.

Hayes said the awkward barrier draw of barrier nine consigned Dunn to taking the filly back to the second half of the field but lauded the daughter of Redoute's Choice's ability to quicken in the straight.

"Coming from last was always going to be a bit of a task but she was impressive," Hayes said. "She joined in very quickly, put it all over, then switched off a little bit.

"I liked the turn of foot from the 400 to the 200 (metres)."

Jimando's new rider Blake Shinn sent the colt forward to share the speed before holding on for third behind Mama's Choice and Formidable, who also raced on the pace.

Hayes said Mama's Choice did not need another run before her shot at Victoria's richest two-year-old race with the filly appearing on the scene at the perfect time to be competitive in the Blue Diamond.

"I'd say we'd be right in it. We have hit form at the right time," Hayes said. "Diamond winners step out around now."

The market: Punters ignored Mama's Choice on-track, allowing the filly to ease from $17 to $31 while Formidable opened at $6, eased to $7, before firming back into his opening quote. Jimando eased from $2 to $2.50 before firming back into $2.40. If I Could drifted from $3.50 to $4 before money forced his quote into $3.70. Timely Truce has specking, firming from $31 into $21. The on-course market closed at 114 percent.
