2012 Blue Diamond Stakes result - Samaready blitzes them
Brad Waters - Saturday, 25 February 2012

Mick Price's nine-year wait for Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) redemption has ended after Samaready blitzed her opposition in Saturday's $1 million juvenile feature at Caulfield.

Price (pic: Steve Hart) lost the 2003 Blue Diamond Stakes in a laboratory when Roedean tested positive to lignocaine, which was present in an ointment used on the Flying Spur filly.

Samaready underlined her Blue Diamond Stakes credentials with two impressive wins at Flemington and Caulfield to start the event as a warm $2.20 favourite. Price said the two-year-old had enjoyed a perfect preparation but he admitted having pre-race nerves.

"It was a mission accomplished, wasn't it? You check yourself training horses all the time but she is just one of those fillies that has had the perfect prep (preparation)," Price said.

"Even saddling her up before the race, she wasn't concerned by the weather and I had a look at her in the mounting yard and thought 'have I done enough with her?' as you do."

Jockey Craig Newitt kept the daughter of More Than Ready in touch with the leaders early before allowing the filly to roll into the race approaching the home turn.

Samaready exploded away from the field passing the 250 metres, leaving her rivals to battle for second place. The Gai Waterhouse-trained No Looking Back took second after finishing bravely from a wide run.

"I just said to the guys 'I've just got to give her room from the 600 (metres) because she is the best horse here and I'll ride her like it'," Newitt said.

"Coming to the corner I had a lapful of horse, she just travelled up to them so sweet and turning for home she did the traditional pin the ears back, stretched her neck and away she went."

The Blue Diamond Stakes win carried further significance for Newitt after he learned his father Guy had died in a car accident during the 2009 Blue Diamond Stakes meeting.

"Three years ago was the worst day of my life but I've been married, have two kids with another one on the way so from that point it's sort of always built up," Newitt said.

"I asked my wife a couple of months ago what are the two races she wanted me to win. She didn't worry about a Melbourne Cup, she wanted a Blue Diamond and a Golden Slipper so we're halfway there.

The Anthony Freedman-trained Armed For Action raced close to the speed before fighting gamely to complete a fillies' trifecta ahead of Jimando and Rusambo.

The on-course market: Samaready eased from $2.10 to $2.40 before firming back into $2.20 on track while punters launched into No Looking Back , backing the Sydney galloper from $9 into $6.50. Armed For Action eased from $21 to $26, Jimando firmed from $15 into $12, Bush Aviator tightened from $41 into $31. The on-course market closed at 116 percent.
