Hussonet
(USA) was given his marching orders from Arrowfield Stud last year and is now
based at Cornerstone Stud in South Australia, so Sam Hayes and his team would
no doubt be cheering his recent run of success which extended to Rosehill on
Saturday where his three year-old filly Colorado Claire captured the Group II
ATC Phar Lap Stakes.
The John O'Shea trained filly improved sharply on her last start eighth in the
Listed Canberra Guineas, finishing with a strong dash to take the 1500 metre
event by a short neck for visiting Kiwi rider James McDonald.
"She's beaten the colts, but what helped was having this wonderful talent
in James McDonald in the saddle. He's just a class act and a wonderful rider,"
O'Shea said.
The trainer said he was stumped as to what to do with the filly next.
"She's thrown a spanner in the works. I was planning on dropping her back
to Listed grade," he said.
"She's an Inglis graduate so she's eligible for the Scone race (Scone
Guineas)."
A $220,000 purchase for bloodstock agent Bill Mitchell from the Arrowfield Stud
draft at the 2010 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, Colorado Claire (pictured as a yearling) is
raced by David Paradice and has the overall record of five wins from seven
starts with prizemoney of $226,050.
Bred by Arrowfield in partnership with John Leaver's Planette Thoroughbred
Trading, she is the 81st stakes-winner for Hussonet and is the first
stakes-winner for her stakes-winning dam Lunaspur, a Flying Spur mare from a
big European Black Type family.
Lunaspur has no yearling for the sales this year but did have a Manhattan Rain colt
last spring and is back in foal to him again.
Colorado Claire is the third stakes-winner for Hussonet in the past eight days
following on from a stakes double last Saturday for Rose of Peace and Werd.
He has seven entries for the 2012 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale including
a colt from champion filly and Golden Slipper winner Miss Finland.
