Smart Australian bred two year-old Rio Carnival scored his first stakes win in South Africa on Saturday.
Having shown promise in two career wins previously the Charles Laird trained Hussonet (USA) (pictured) colt won the Listed Thukela Handicap by a comfortable three lengths.
He was a $55,000 purchase from the Arrowfield draft at the 2009 Magic Millions National Weanling Sale and is the second winner for Group II placed Snippets mare Hot Beat, a half-sister to stakes-winner Nevet from the family of Golden Slipper winner Dark Eclipse and Group I winner Denman.
Rio Carnival is the eighth stakes winner for Hussonet this season and his second overall in South Africa.
He is standing this season at South Australia's Cornerstone Stud at a fee of $25,000.
