Who’s Hot in Hong Kong?
Tara Madgwick - Monday, 16 July 2012

The 2011/ 2012 Hong Kong racing season came to a close on Sunday with Coolmore heavyweight Encosta de Lago stamping his dominance on the highly competitive circuit to be the champion sire with 14 winners of $HK26 million in prizemoney.

The Hong Kong racing fraternity became enamoured with Encosta de Lago and his offspring following the achievements of his super star sprinter Sacred Kingdom, who blazed a magnificent trail through the HK racing scene from 2006 right through until his retirement earlier this year.

His success prompted many Hong Kong trainers and agents to head south in search of further Encosta stars and while none have yet lived up to the lofty standard set by Sacred Kingdom, their quest has yielded a steady stream of winners including smart performer Liberator (pictured), who was crowned Champion Stayer at the annual awards ceremony on Sunday.

Turning 19 this year, Encosta de Lago stands this season at a reduced fee of $82,500 and while the commercial shine of this two time Champion Australian Sire (2007/2008, 2008/2009) may have diminished somewhat, he is still churning out winners all over the world.

Encosta de Lago is running seventh on the Australian General Sires List by earnings with 10 stakes-winners and progeny earnings in excess of $6million and was nearly in the Group I frame in South Africa on the weekend where his high class three year-old son Delago Deluxe finished second in the Group I Mercury Sprint at Clairwood.
