Darley Stud's champion stallion Lonhro has made a habit of striking in stakes races at the start of a new season and his admirable son Pinwheel has been centre stage in the past two seasons.
Barely three weeks into last season Pinwheel claimed the Warwick Stakes (G2) at Warwick Farm, which was the scene of his latest victory in Saturday's Group 3 McGrath Missile Stakes (1200m).
Making his
first start since finishing a close-up fourth in the Group 1 Stradbroke
Handicap at Eagle Farm on June 9, Pinwheel had too much class for the honest Centennial
Park (Thorn Park) who closed to within one and a quarter lengths on the line with

Pinwheel's trainer Peter Snowden credited Kerrin McEvoy 's positive ride for paving the way to the geldings success.
"Dominant ride. He put him right in the gun spot," Snowden said. "We thought he might be a bit soft, a bit vulnerable and if he got too far back it may have negated his chances of winning."
"He knows how to race and it surprised me how well he finished today which is good signs because I really thought the Warwick Stakes next would be his best run this time in," he said.
"He's going to go there with that run under his belt in good form."
Winning rider Kerrin McEvoy was lavish in his praise.
"He's still got that drive there and I knew he'd rested enough to stoke him up and put them to the sword," McEvoy said.
"When I stoked him up I sort of got there and cruised along for a little while rather than hit the front right at the top of the straight. I gave him a crack there at the last 100 and it was good to see him go away."
"His prizemoney is getting up there and still retains his zest for racing so it's a good effort by everyone,"
Pinwheel is edging closer to the magical million dollar barrier. The 7yo gelding has claimed 11 wins and 13 placings from his 33 starts with earnings of $975,500
Previous
winner of the Group 3 W J Healy Stakes (1200m) at Eagle Farm and a pair of
Listed wins in the Ramornie Handicap and Canterbury Classic in addition to his
Warwick Stakes success, Pinwheel is the
sixth foal of the Danehill mare Quilt who failed to win in four starts.
She produced 11 foals from her first 11 seasons at stud including Pinwheel's $200,000 earning sister Counterpane.
In 2009 Quilt was sold for just $16,000 to Shaun Reid at the Magic Millions National Broodmare sale. She was carrying an Elusive Quality colt that Reid sold at the Magic Millions National Yearling sale for $50,000.
Quilt has a 2yo full sister to Pinwheel who was sold for $100,000 at this year's Inglis Premier Yearling sale so the $16,000 purchase is looking a sound investment.
After not being covered in 2010 due to her late foaling, Quilt was served by Lonhro's grand looking son Denman last year.
