Astute
young trainer Jason Warren stopped short of saying this debut winner at Geelong
on Friday was a 'Derby horse', but you could tell that's what he was thinking.
New Zealand bred three year-old Crikey O'Reilly was backed from $21 into $15
for his first start in the 1300 metre maiden and steamed home to win by a nose
in an encouraging performance.
"We bought him in New Zealand at their Ready to Run Sale hoping he would be a
stayer, so this is a good way to start off," Jason Warren said.
"At this time of year if you have a young horse that can stay, who knows where
you can end up."
Crikey O'Reilly (pictured at the Ready to Run Sale) was purchased for $100,000 from the Diamond Lodge draft and was
a successful pinhook having first been bought for $20,000 from the Waikato Stud
draft at the 2011 NZB Select Yearling Sale.
He is the third winner from Centaine mare Saveke, who won up to 2200 metres and
is a daughter of Group II place-getter Tramaurea, whose dam Centaurea won the
Group I SAJC Australasian Oaks.
Crikey O'Reilly is bred on the magic O'Reilly x Centaine cross that has
produced a dozen stakes-winners including Group I winners Alamosa, Guyno and
MacO'Reilly.
