Son of Mossman Captures Lawrence Stakes
Mark Smith - Saturday, 18 August 2012

Mossman gelding Second Effort showed a liking for the heavy conditions at Caulfield when he earned his second stakes victory with a brave effort in Saturday's Group 2 P B Lawrence Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield.

The Clinton McDonald-trained 6yo won his first stakes race back in April in the Listed Wangoon Handicap at Warrnambool. He finished down the track in the Listed Straight Six at Flemington and was given two months off before he finished a troubled sixth in the Listed Sir John Monash stakes at Caulfield. He sprung a plate that day and the farrier had a hard time removing it.

"He was a little bit mentally jaded from that. I galloped him after that race and he just wasn't 100 percent so I said to the owners, 'let's try something different'," McDonald said.

"We sent him down to the beach and he came back in terrific fashion. I have got to say a big thank you to (trainer) Shea Eden, who has done a lot of beach work with the horse. He has done a fantastic job."

Second Effort is the first foal of the 5-time Adelaide winner Relatively (Geiger Counter) . A daughter of the WATC Gimcrack Stakes (LR) winner Western Zip (Zephyr Zip), Relatively produced just one foal, a filly by Snippetson, in the next five years at stud.

Last year she dropped a filly by Magic Albert before being one of 150 mares to visit Reward For Effort in his first season at Chatswood Stud last year.
