The
fertility issues that curtailed the stud career of Australia's world champion sprinter
Starspangledbanner have been well documented, which is why there is so much
interest in his first and only crop of Aussie bred foals including this filly
bred by Steve Young of Orange Grove Thoroughbreds.
Born on August 11, this beautiful brown filly is the first foal of young imported
mare South in Dixie (USA), a two year-old winning half-sister by ill-fated sire
Dixie Union to Group III winner Whimsy.
Mr Young sent three mares to Starspangledbanner at Coolmore last year and was
lucky enough to get two of them in foal with this filly the first to hit the
ground.
South in Dixie is booked to Street Cry (IRE) this season, thereby emulating the
same cross with Dixieland Band that produced the Group I Breeders Cup Juvenile
and Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense.
A four-time Group I winning son of Choisir, Starspangledbanner has been
returned to training at Ballydoyle in Ireland under the care of Aidan O'Brien.
