On the day Darley Stud paraded 15 stallions before a throng of breeders and enthusiasts at its showpiece property at Aberdeen, Sheik Mohammed's silks were carried to victory in the Group 3 Up And Coming Stakes at Warwick Farm before the ageless warrior Pinwheel completed a great day for Darley with a typically game performance to claim his second consecutive Warwick Stakes (G2).
The winner of the Up And Coming Stakes (G3), Albrecht, is a Darley homebred although he is not by one of its stallions. He is a son of Arrowfield Stud's champion stallion Redoute's Choice who was in the news during the week when it was revealed he would shuttle to the Aga Khan's French Stud after completing his southern hemisphere duties.
Ironically Albrecht defeated the fast finishing Toydini a
daughter of Darley Stud's Bernardini (USA) while the third placed Tatra, a
stablemate mate of the winner, is by Cornerstone Stud's Hussonet (USA), a
former Arrowfield resident.
It was the second win in three starts for Albrecht, who opened her account at first time of asking at Canterbury in June before finishing third at the same track three weeks ago.
Trainer Peter Snowden would not commit to a run in the Golden Rose (G1) for the son of Redoute's Choice.
"I've got an opinion on where we should go but I'll sit down and talk with the team," Snowden said.
"He still did things wrong out there. Believe me he's a talented horse."
Winning rider Kerrin McEvoy made no secret of where he thinks the colt should be headed.
"I'd be heading to the Golden Rose. Against that A-grad opposition, that will switch him on," McEvoy said.
"He did that in third gear. He's going to be really exciting I think."
Albrecht is the second foal and the first stakes-winner for the unraced Octagonal mare O'Giselle a full-sister to 11-time Group 1 winner Lonhro, triple group 1 winner Niello and dual Listed stakes-winner Shannara.
O'Giselle has a 2yo colt by New Approach (IRE) named Petipa. She was covered by Street Cry (IRE) last year after missing to Medaglia D'Oro (USA) in 2010.
Albrecht becomes the 90th stakes-winner for Redoute's Choice (pictured)who looked a picture of health roaming his paddock a matter of a week before covering his twelfth book of mares at Arrowfield Stud.
Pinwheel kept the ball rolling for Darley when defending his
Warwick Stakes (G2) crown. With his sixth stakes success, the son of Lonhro
became racing's latest equine millionaire when the winners cheque of $105,00
took his earnings to $1,082,400.
The 7yo gelding is a stable favourite and trainer Peter Snowden was effusive in his praise.
"No horse deserves it more than he does," Snowden said. "He's just below that top standard but gives everything.
"He'll probably head to the Theo Marks Stakes and then continue to run in these types of races."
Pinwheel is the sixth foal of the Danehill mare Quilt who was sold off by Darley for $16,000 at the Magic Millions National Broodmare sale.
Quilt has a 2yo full sister to Pinwheel who was sold for $100,000 at this year's Inglis Premier Yearling sale. Not covered in 2010 due to her late foaling, Quilt was served by Lonhro's son Denman last year.
