Their Turn Will Come
Tara Madgwick - Sunday, 26 August 2012

They didn't win Black Type races on Saturday, but they soon will.

They are talented three year-old filly Commanding Jewel, who maintained her unbeaten record with a stylish win at Caulfield and progressive four year-old Strawberry Boy, who kicked off his spring campaign with a dominant victory at Warwick Farm.

A homebred for John Singleton's Strawberry Hill Stud, Strawberry Boy (pictured www.stevehart.com.au) led most of the way to win the Benchmark 80 event over 1300 metres by more than two lengths, taking his overall record to three wins from four starts.

His trainer Gai Waterhouse immediately announced big plans for the lightly raced gelding by Redoute's Choice.

"The Metrop, the Caulfield Cup, he's got to get qualified for those races but he's a really exciting horse," Waterhouse said.

"This is a really, really exciting horse you've seen here today. He could do anything, he could go anywhere.

"Physically he's very much like Nothin' Leica Dane."

Strawberry Boy is a half-brother to eight other winners including stakes-winners Danroad, Newtown Jet and Tippitaka being from the good producer Strawberry Girl (USA), a stakes-placed daughter of former champion racehorse and sire Strawberry Road.

Boom filly Commanding Jewel (pictured Racepix Vic) carries a heavy weight of expectation on her shoulders being a three-quarter sister by Commands to glamour filly Atlantic Jewel, but the Leon Corstens trained filly eased some of that burden with another textbook victory in the open fillies event over 1200 metres.

Winning rider Damien Oliver said Commanding Jewel had something in hand on the post, adding the emerging filly would enjoy stepping up to at least 1400 metres in her current preparation.

"She has got a touch of quality about her," Oliver said. "She settled nicely in behind them and she showed a great turn of foot.

"She quickened up nicely to have control of the race on the turn and she won without being tested too much. I'd just keep pressing on. There are no worries with the 1400.

"I was really pleased with the way she settled behind them and accelerated really good so I don't think there will be any trouble with her running further."

Commanding Jewel will get the chance to run further in the near future as she is entered for the Group I MRC Thousand Guineas and Caulfield Guineas.

Foaled and raised at Vinery for her breeder Greg Perry, Commanding Jewel was purchased for $205,000 from the Vinery draft at Magic Millions and runs for a syndicate put together by Brad Spicer of Spicer Thoroughbreds.

She is the second and final living foal from Zabeel mare Regard, who died prematurely in 2011.
