Early Spring Showdown for Star Colts
Tara Madgwick - Friday, 31 August 2012

This time last year it was Smart Missile defeating Foxwedge and Helmet in the Group III ATC Run to the Rose, with all three about to embark on stud careers at major farms this spring, while at Rosehill on Saturday a new group of sire prospects will do battle.

The Run to the Rose has attracted a small, but select field of just six well-bred colts, all of whom would have aspirations of a future stud career.

Leading the field is undefeated Pierro (pictured www.stevehart.com.au) , the Golden Slipper and Triple Crown winning son of champion racehorse and sire Lonhro.

Gai Waterhouse will have him as ready as he can be given his long spring program ahead, but like most of the runners here, he will no doubt be better for the run.

Black Caviar's half-brother All Too Hard was beaten last start by a couple of fillies in Snitzerland and Driefontein when resuming from a spell in the Group III ATC San Domenico Stakes and will need to lift his game if he's going to turn the tables on Pierro, who beat him comfortably in the Group I ATC Sires Produce Stakes last autumn.

Ashokan is a good looking son of More Than Ready (USA), whose only win to date was on wet ground in the Group III ATC Skyline Stakes last season and will need to have improved to trouble the top two colts.

Helmet's three-quarter brother Epaulette has come the closest to beating Pierro, when second to that colt beaten a short half head in the Group II ATC Todman Stakes. He has won at his only fresh runs and had a solid trial to tune him up for this, so could pose a serious threat.

Rounding out the six are two lightly raced sons of Fastnet Rock in Your Song and Ninth Legion, both of whom show well above average ability and can be expected to be steaming home at the finish.

Make no mistake this is a very competitive race and these are the colts we can probably expect to see headlining stud rosters next spring.

Several of these colts would have their future at stud already decided, All Too Hard raced by Patinack Farm and Epaulette by Darley, but Pierro and Ashokan would certainly be for sale at some point in the future, while Your Song (Gooree Stud) and Ninth Legion (Segenhoe Thoroughbreds) may also have varied options ahead of them.
