Encosta de Lago gelding Tagus scored the biggest win of his career when upstaging
his younger and more fancied rivals to win the Group III ATC Show County Quality
at Warwick Farm on Saturday.
The John Thompson trained eight year-old was friendless with punters, but
surged away at the finish for Jim Cassidy to win the 1400 metre handicap by a
long neck at his third run back from a spell.
"We were quietly confident coming into the race," said Thompson.
"Jimmy rode him well and got the job done. He's an older horse coming back from
injury, so we've been poking along and racing him into fitness and the drop from
59kg at weight for age last start to 54 was in his favour."
A $250,000 purchase from the Baramul Stud draft from the 2006 Magic Millions
Yearling Sale, Tagus races for Patinack Farm in partnership with his breeder
Gerry Harvey and has won 10 of 44 starts earning $544,080 in prizemoney..
Tagus is a half-brother to Group I winner and Patinack Farm foundation sire
Casino Prince as well as stakes-winner Lord of the Land being from top notch producer
Lady Capel, who has a yearling filly by High Chaparral (IRE) and is due to foal
to Congrats (USA) this spring.
Tagus is the first stakes-winner of the new season for former champion sire
Encosta de Lago, who stands at Coolmore this spring at a fee of $82,500.
