Two for the Future
Tara Madgwick - Sunday, 23 September 2012

If things go right for these guys, expect to see them at Flemington on November 3.

Champion sires Redoute's Choice and Fastnet Rock drew a blank in terms of siring an Australian stakes-winner on Saturday, but each has high hopes for the future with a couple of colts that both won impressively at Caulfield.

Exciting colt Lankan Rupee (pictured Racepix Vic) was our 'One to Watch' when he won on debut at Cranbourne on September 6 and confirmed that promise with a stylish two and a quarter length win in the 1000 metre sprint for three year-olds.

The Mick Price trained son of Redoute's Choice is a fabulous looking individual and boasts a distinctive heart shaped marking on his head.

He handled the jump from maiden to Saturday class with ease, prompting Price to reveal bigger plans for Lankan Rupee with the Group I Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on Derby Day a likely target.

"I'm pretty sure he's a sprinter," Price said. "He looks like a sprinter, he works like a sprinter so we'll just keep him sprinting.

"I know there are a few options at this time of year but hopefully we can keep him alive until Derby day. He's very well bred, he's still a colt and I think he's improving."

A homebred for Teeley Assets, Lankan Rupee is the first winner for the Stravinsky (USA) mare Estelle Collection(NZ), who was bought by Teeley for $240,000 at the 2005 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale and went on to win the Group III MVRC Champagne Stakes.

Estelle Collection comes from an outstanding family, her dam Ana Zeel being a three-quarter sister to Group I winners Grosvenor and National Gallery, while other Group I winners on the page include champion racehorse and sire Lonhro as well as Mahaya, Niello and Miss Keepsake.

Saluting in the previous race was highly promising Fastnet Rock colt Hvasstan, who will be geared towards some of the longer events by his trainer Peter Gelagotis.

An easy maiden winner at Sale last start, Hvasstan (pictured Racepix Vic) brought that good form to town to score a strong win in the open 1700 metre event for three year-olds, his overall record now two wins and a second from four starts.

Hvasstan is expected to have his next run in the Group II MRC Norman Robinson Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield on October 20 and if he runs to expectation will progress on to the Group 1 VRC Derby (2500m) at Flemington a fortnight later.

A $260,000 Inglis Premier purchase from the draft of Supreme Thoroughbreds, Hvasstan is from Group II placed Snow Hero.
