The official two year-old trials at Warwick Farm on Monday morning featured 11 heats over 850 metres and a number of exciting winners including one with a topical name Fiftyshadesofgrey!.
It's been the book of the year and nearly everyone has either read it or sneaked a peak at the juicy bits, so it's fair to say that when Fiftyshadesofgrey does make her debut she will be a popular pick with the 'good name' punters.
Prepared by Marc Conners, Fiftyshadesofgrey (pictured as a yearling) is well named being by Written Tycoon from Talkin' About and was a modest purchase snapped up for just $27,000 from the Rosemont Stud draft at the Magic Millions.
Fit, well-educated and ready to go, Fiftyshadesofgrey turned in a very professional effort to win her heat by three-quarters of a length with Most Joyful, the full sister to champion mare More Joyous, running a nice second.
The Waterhouse stable might have missed the win with Most Joyful, but they hit the mark with several other blue-bloods including a pair of More Than Ready youngsters in War and Sugar Rush.
A $500,000 Inglis Easter purchase for Coolmore from the Strawberry Hill draft, War beat his stablemate Mr Jackman in a competitive finish and both colts look to be bright prospects.
War is a three-quarter brother-in-blood to More Joyous being by her sire More Than Ready (USA) from the Zabeel mare Deedra, a half-sister to her dam Sunday Joy.
Another expensive yearling purchase is Sugar Rush, who made it two trial wins when she powered away to win by two and a half lengths.
The top priced filly from Magic Millions this year, Sugar Rush (pictured) was a $600,000 purchase from Strawberry Hill stud and is from former brilliant juvenile Sugar Babe.
A $250,000 Magic Million purchase from Arrowfield Stud, Rockford (pictured below) will also add to the Waterhouse assault on the early spring races after scoring a good win in his trial.
By Flying Spur from Ready Magic, he is a three-quarter brother in blood to Group II ATC Light Fingers Stakes winner Trezevant, who was also prepared by Waterhouse.
Another blue-blood to salute for Waterhouse was Fastnet Rock filly Shahad, who took a split between runners to surge through and win her heat by a neck from the Murtajill filly Grey Countess.
A homebred for Emirates Park, Shahad is the fourth living foal from the former Waterhouse trained Emirates owned star Shamekha, who won three Group I events including the STC Coolmore Classic.
The fastest heat of the day was actually the first which went to the Jason Coyle trained Stratum colt Va Pensiero, which held off another Waterhouse trained runner in the fast finishing Whittington with Miss Finland's Hussonet (USA) colt Woodbine finishing third some four and three-quarter lengths back.
They ran the trip in 50.02 seconds and the winner is from former handy metropolitan mare Rosmarino, a grand-daughter of Group II winner Gelsomino.
