What a fabulous ambassador Buffering has been for his sire Mossman.
The 5yo gelding has been a star since he reeled off four consecutive wins as a 2yo in Brisbane.
He earned his first stakes win two years to the day in the Roman Consul Stakes at Randwick and trainer Robert Heathcote has kept him in the best company since.
He has lined up in 11 Group 1 races since that day and placed in seven of them and in his 27 starts has missed a cheque just once.
So there
could be no more deserving winner of Friday nights Group 2 Spotless AJ Moir
Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley.
Although he was a bit sluggishly away, Buffering was sent straight to the front by Hugh Bowman. The son of Mossman (pictured) was at his tenacious best to hold off the fast finishing Ready To Rip (More Than Ready) by a half-neck.
"He just jumped up in the air, first-up and a bit on the fresh side and I thought 'I'm in trouble here'," Bowman said. "Because I had to make use of him, it took me a little while to get him back into a nice rhythm and I actually didn't get him into a nice rhythm until the 800."
Trainer Robert Heathcote said Buffering's fighting spirit was the decisive factor.
"Missing the start and having to do that little bit of work just made things that little bit harder," Heathcote said. "We knew when the cards were on the table that this guy would really fight.
"He just does that every time he goes around."
Heathcote said the Group 2 Schillaci Stakes would likely be Buffering's next target.
"The ultimate goal is the Group 1, the Manikato (Stakes) and that was part of the idea of coming here tonight," Heathcote said. "If I have to, I will just hold him back and just come back here in a month."
Consigned by Racetree to the 2009 Magic Millions QTIS Yearling Sale, Buffering was purchased by New Zealand based bloodstock agent Paul Willetts for $22,000.
Friday's victory took his overall record to 10 wins, 7 seconds and 4 thirds from 27 starts for earnings of $1,963,900.
Buffering is the third foal of the Sydney winning Anabaa mare Action Annie who was sold the same year her son went through the sales ring. In foal to Greenwood Lake she changed hands for just $5,000. The Greenwood Lake foal died and Action Annie has had just two live foals since Buffering, the 4yo mare Suite Annie (Hotel Grand) who has won just one of her 8 starts and was most recently last at Rockhampton, and a yearling colt by Hidden Dragon.
