The decision of connections to miss the $1 million Group 1 Golden Rose at Rosehill Gardens with Pierro to give him some match practice around Moonee Valley was rewarded on Friday when the undefeated son of Lonhro had a stroll in the park in the $220,000 Group 2 City Jeep Bill Stutt Stakes (1600m).
With regular rider Nash Rawiller in the saddle, Pierro made the race a one act affair in the straight. With ears laid flat back, he was pushed out by Rawiller to win by four and three-quarter lengths from Carringbush Jack.
"He's
such an adaptable horse, he took the first turn like he had been around it 100
times," Rawiller said. "That's what
makes him as good as he is, he just adapts to situations."
"I wanted it to be as soft as possible but still get a job done. He'll get a bit of improvement out of this," Rawiller added.
"I knew she (Waterhouse) would have him fit enough here tonight and there is still more improvement to come.
"He's not a horse that is going to win a race by 10 lengths but he just gets the job done."
Trainer Gai Waterhouse said the champion colt would have his next start in the Group 1Caulfield Guineas before his ultimate targget the Group 1 Cox Plate.
"He's just such an exciting colt. It was just a galloping lesson," Waterhouse said. "I loved the way he lowered himself and found the line and his acceleration at the end of the race, that was the best thing.
"Going
from 1200 to 16(00), I knew that wouldn't be a problem. He's really exciting
and we are privileged, I think, to see a colt as good as this."
Winner of all of his 8 starts including last season's two-year old Triple Crown, Pierro takes his earnings to $3,154,950
Bred by Darley, Pierro was pinhooked as a weanling for $115,000 before being offered at the 2011 Magic Millions yearling sale where trainer Gai Waterhouse signed the ticket for $230,000 on behalf of owners Greg and Donna Kolivos.
His dam Miss Right Note (IRE), a daughter of the champion Daylami, won in France before continuing her career in Australia where she was a winner at Randwick.
She has a yearling sister to Pierro and was covered last year by Street Cry (IRE).
