Not A Single
Doubt's 3YO daughter Arenzano turned heads at Devonport in Tasmania on
Sunday when she won a 1000-metre maiden by 15 lengths in track record time of
59,40 seconds.
The previous mark of 59.47 seconds was set in January this year by subsequent
Group 3 winner Rebel Bride.
Sydneysiders watching the race might wonder why she carries the famous
"Purple, White Stars & Cap" of Star Thoroughbreds.
A glance at the list of owners and a little bit of background information
explains all. "Ms D.J. Martin" is more familiar as Star
Thoroughbreds' Tasmanian-born principal Denise Martin, whose sister Anne is
married to Arenzano's (pictured Tasracing) trainer Barry Campbell.
Denise is a regular visitor to the annual Magic Millions Tasmanian Thoroughbred
Yearling Sale and in 2011 she spotted a well-made filly, by Not A Single Doubt
from the Grand Lodge mare Marina Miss, offered under the Reibey Lodge banner by
breeders Rob & Liz Dixon. The filly was knocked down for $60,000, the Sale's
second-highest price.
In an interview with Tasracing's Peter Staples, Barry Campbell expressed little
surprise about the filly's performance today, after two facile trial wins and a
debut third last season. He suggested that she will be well-suited to 1400
metres, given the way she finishes her work and her races, and that the
upcoming Tasmanian summer carnival holds plenty of appealing options for her.
Arenzano was one of four weekend winners for Not A Single Doubt who is among
the top 10 Australian sires so far this season with 26 individual winners and
$806,350 prizemoney.
Obvious inexperience did not prevent debutante Spontaneity (ex Kimash by Jeune)
from romping home by more than 3 lengths over 900 metres at the Gold Coast
yesterday.
Spontaneity is trained and raced in partnership by her breeder Steve Tregea of
Windemere Stud, who has already had success with Not A Single Doubt: he also
bred last season's 2YO stakeswinner Cheyenne Warrior.
6YO gelding So So Sure, a winner of five races in Sydney from the Joe Pride
stable, also won at the Gold Coast, while in Perth 3YO gelding Make Your Move
(ex Time To Move by Canny Lad) put up a very game effort under 59kg topweight
to secure his third consecutive win from the stable of Lou & Dion Luciani.
Bred by Jess Hood, Make Your Move was purchased for $70,000 by well-known Perth
agent John Chalmers from the Bellerive Stud draft at the 2011 Inglis Melbourne
Premier Sale.
