Mourayan Hangs Tough In Craven Plate
Mark Smith - Sunday, 7 October 2012

Twelve months ago Mourayan (IRE) won the Listed The Bart Cummings at Flemington to break his duck at his 17th start in Australia and twelve months later added Saturday's Group III Craven Plate (2000m) at Royal Randwick. to kick-start a productive day for team Williams.

The son of Alhaarth needs to be stood over and Hugh Bowman was the right man for the job.

Two years ago he finished second to Herculian Prince in The Metropolitan(G1) and those two poured on the pace in Saturday's race. When Herculian Prince backed up, Mourayan looked a sitting shot for Western Symbol who joined the battle.

But Mourayan was up to the fight defeating Western Symbol by a head with Dare To Dream finishing strongly for third, a long neck back.

"I really put the pressure on and got him rolling from about the 700," Bowman said.

"When Nash [Rawiller on Western Symbol] came to me and they could only get to within half a length of me I though it's going to take a good horse to beat him because he fights like a caged dog.

"He's a thorough joy to ride."

The former Aga Khan homebred arrived on these shores with some decent form having missed a place just twice in 7 starts, which included a Listed win at Leopardstown.

He was second to champion Sea The Stars in the Beresford Stakes, albeit beaten 5-lengths, and was placed behind Fame and Glory in the Ballysax Stakes (G3), Derby Trial (G2) and Irish Derby (G1).

A son of Alhaarth (Unfuwain), Mourayan is a half-brother Mourilyan (Desert Prince) who ran third behind Shocking and Crime Scene in the Melbourne Cup for his controversial owner Ramzan Kadyr.

In his adopted homeland, in a addition to finishing second to Herculian Prince in the Metropolitan Handicap (G1), Mourayan settled for the same spot behind the ill-fated Cedarburg in The BMW Stakes (G1) at Rosehill and to Glass Harmonium in theMackinnon Stakes (G1).
