Exceed And Excel Strikes Early
Mark Smith - Sunday, 7 October 2012

Darley came close to landing two rich prizes with first starters by Exceed And Excel on Saturday with Kuroshio winning the Listed Herald-Sun (Maribyrnong Trial) Stakes (1000m) at Flemington shortly after Guelph was a fast finishing second in the Listed Gimcrack Stakes at Randwick.

Glen Boss had Kuroshio fast away before he was all out to hold off the fast finishing Flying Spur colt Rockford for had been sent down from Sydney by trainer Gai Waterhouse.

"What you see is what you get with this bloke," trainer Peter Snowden said. "He's a little professional bloke. He jumps, he's got good toe and he did a good job actually.

"That's his forte, he does everything right. He wanted to lay out a bit in the straight, which was a bit disappointing but he can only win. He did that and he did it well.

"I don't think he's Sepoy but he's started on a winning note and it's all good."

Snowden revealed he hold the current crop of two-year olds in high regard.

"It's a little bit too early to predict too far ahead," Snowden said. "I'm quietly confident I have got some really nice horses coming through.

"This bloke was always there and he was always a little whippet type."

A full-brother to Blue Diamond Prelude winner Believe 'N' Succeed, Kuroshio is the fifth foal of the Gone West mare Arctic Drift (USA) whose dam November Show (Storm Cat) is a sister to dual Grade 1 winner November Snow.

Arctic Drift has a yearling colt by Medaglia D'Oro (USA) and was not served last year.
