How Did He Do That?
Tara Madgwick - Tuesday, 9 October 2012

How do you buy a stakes-winning filly from one of the best and most commercial female families in the studbook for $11,000? Stuart Ramsey tells us how.

Popular owner/breeder Stuart Ramsey was in the winner's circle at Randwick on Saturday with a new stakes-winner in Brilliant Bisc, who saluted at long odds in the Listed ATC Gimcrack Stakes.

That in itself is not surprising as Ramsey breeds a great many horses at his Turangga Farm and many of them have performed at the elite level, what is surprising is that this is one he bought from the Inglis Weanling Sale for a paltry $11,000 out of the Amarina Farm draft.

Bred in Victoria at Wood Nook Farm, Brilliant Bisc (pictured) is the last foal of Group I winner Stella Cadente(now retired from stud duties), a blue-blooded daughter of champion sire Centaine from the prized Eau d'Etoile family that has given us Group I stars Bint Marscay, Filante, Kenny's Best Pal, Benicio, Bollinger and even a bit more distantly and recently Ortensia.

Despite her impressive bloodlines Stella Cadente has been somewhat of an underachiever at stud

Sent to the best stallions in the country, Stella Cadente has had seven foals to race for six winners with the best before Brilliant Bisc being stakes-placed performers Starfish and Moon Fever, who has achieved success at stud as the dam of stakes-winner Aeronautical.

It seems an irony that Stella Cadente has left the best til last and achieved a stakes-winner through a mating with Elvstroem, a stallion that would arguably be seen as the least successful she has been to… ah, the vagaries of thoroughbred breeding!

"I was looking through that catalogue and I liked the pedigree," Stuart Ramsey explained.

"She has the double cross of Biscay and there haven't been many more brilliant than him that I've seen over the years.

"I spoke to Craig Anderson at Amarina Farm and he said she was small and light and had a parrot mouth, but there was nothing really wrong with her and then I asked Ian Macpherson to go and take a look at her and he said exactly the same thing."

Ramsey decided to take a punt at the money and now has a very valuable broodmare prospect for the future even if she never runs again.

"As soon as we got her home, we put her straight into a paddock on her own and started feeding her up," Ramsey said.

"With the parrot mouth, they don't get as much feed in the paddock with the other horses I don't think, so I just wanted to get as much condition on her as possible.

"She grew into a lovely athletic filly, so we sent her down to Peter Moody and it wasn't long before he said she could gallop."

Brilliant Bisc beat a couple of blue-bloods in winning the Gimcrack, getting the better of Guelph (Exceed and Excel from Group I winner Camarilla) and Shahad (Fastnet Rock from Group I winner Shamekha), all three place-getters from Group I winners.

"She was the youngest filly in that race, born in late October, so we've tipped her straight out and she's back in her paddock at Turangga now," Ramsey said.

"She's done her job and can make her own history now."

Brilliant Bisc is one of 110 stakes-winners that carry a double cross of Biscay within their first five removes according to Arion and interestingly, Group I ATC Flight Stakes winner Norzita is another.

Other Group I winners bred this way are Jimmy Choux, Melito, Response, Fashions Afield, Ofcourseican, Gimmethegreenlight, Response, River Dove, Penny Gem and Preserve, not to mention a very serious spring contender in Kabayan.

No wonder Stuart Ramsey's interest was piqued by the double cross of Biscay.
