Mummify won the 2003 Caulfield Cup and was one of the bravest horses to look through a bridle, so his many fans will be pleased to see that his half-sister Medusa's Miss also has her share of ability.
A three year-old filly by the now WA based sire Henny Hughes (USA)(pictured) , the Kevin Moses trained Medusa's Miss improved at her third run back form a spell to win a very competitive Benchmark 70 event for fillies at Warwick Farm on Wednesday.
A winner on debut back in April, Medusa's Miss was second beaten a neck when resuming from a spell at Hawkesbury last month behind Jolie Bay, who won the Group II ATC Roman Consul Stakes at Randwick last Saturday, so always had good form for a race like this.
Well ridden by apprentice jockey Jenny Duggan, she settled off the pace and chimed in with a strong finishing burst to win the 1200 metre contest going away by a length and a half.
"We thought on breeding that she might want a bit further, but for the moment we'll keep her at the shorter trips," said Kevin Moses.
"She has a terrific group of owners including some that are new to racing, so it's a great result."
Medusa's Miss was bred by Eliza Park and is leased by her owners and has two wins and a second from five starts.
She is one of four winners from the At Talaq (USA) mare Cleopatra's Girl, whose best offspring is the mighty Mummify, who won nine races and $3.8 million highlighted by Group I victories in the Caulfield Cup, SA Derby, MRC Underwood Stakes, Yalumba Stakes and Singapore Airlines International Cup.
Even in defeat, the Lee Freedman trained Mummify was unforgettable, finishing third at his last start in the 2005 Caulfield Cup when he finished the race on three legs after leading all the way under his top weight of 57 kg before going down by a short neck and a short neck behind Railings and Eye Popper.
Mummify shattered the sesamoid bone of his near foreleg and was subsequently euthanized and buried at Freedman's property alongside champion sprinter Schillaci.
Now aged 20, Cleopatra's Girl has a yearling filly by Wanted and was covered last spring by Bel Esprit.
