Another Mill Park Stakes-Winner
Tara Madgwick - Sunday, 14 October 2012

Leading South Australian nursery Mill Park Stud celebrated another new stakes-winner on Sunday when talented staying mare Midnight Martini landed the Listed $200,000 Cranbourne Cup.

The Mark Kavanagh trained daughter of Street Cry (IRE) turned in a career best performance for Michael Rodd, careering away at the finish to score a commanding two and three-quarter length win in the 2025 metre feature beating two more stayers by Street Cry in Streets Away and Streaky Fella to give their sire a rare Black Type trifecta.

"She's a talented mare and it's good to see her back flying. The blinkers on made a difference and she really sprinted away from them in a good return to form," Kavanagh said after the win.

The win has capped a successful comeback for Midnight Martini, who broke down this time last year in the Group III VRC The Lexus when trying to secure a start in the Melbourne Cup.

A homebred for prominent South Australian breeders Mill Park and Toorak Park, Midnight Martini (pictured Racepix Vic) has always shown above average staying ability and looks ready to fulfil her potential this preparation.

With six wins and a three placings from just 17 starts and prizemoney of $317,098, Midnight Martini will target the Group II VRC Matriarch at Flemington on the final day of the carnival.

Bred to appreciate a journey, Midnight Martini is the second winner for the Zabeel mare Benvenuta, a winning daughter of Group I New Zealand Oaks winner Sawatdee.

Benvenuta was sold in 2010 as part of the Toorak Park Dispersal fetching $47,500 and has since produced a two year-old filly by Starcraft for her new owners, but nothing since.

Midnight Martini is the 57th stakes-winner worldwide for Darley heavyweight Street Cry (IRE), who stands this spring at a fee of $110,000.
