A homebred for Darley, prepared by Peter Snowden Exceed and Excel colt Kuroshio proved too strong for fast finishing Rockford in the Listed VRC Maribrynong Trial on debut and wouldn't be lining up here if he'd not pleased since.

That said, he was not dominant in winning and there will be plenty of punters looking to take him on.

Most expensive runner in the race is More Than Ready (USA) colt Laduree (pictured as a yearling) , a $220,000 Magic Millions purchase from the draft of Broadwater Thoroughbreds for his trainer Danny O'Brien.

The colt is the second foal of Fauchon, a full sister to champion two year-old Meurice from the family of Cox Plate winner Rubiton, so he lacks for nothing on either pedigree or looks.

Two fillies that were retained by their breeders and are bred to go fast and early are the Gai Waterhouse trained Overreach and Scandiva from the Anthony Cummings stable.

A homebred for George Altomonte's Corumbene Stud, Overreach is by 'King of the Kids' Exceed and Excel from the former brilliant Snippets filly Bahia, who was unbeaten in winning her only four starts in the Sydney metropolitan area for Gai Waterhouse.

Overreach is a three-quarter sister-in-blood to Group I MRC Blue Diamond Stakes winner Reward for Effort and has won her only trial at Rosehill, so is clearly not in Melbourne to see the sights.

Fastnet Rock filly Scandiva is a half-sister to Group I winner Magnus and Group II winner Wilander from Group II winning Snippets mare Scandinavia and while that sounds like a good pedigree… we haven't got to the best bit yet!

Scandinavia is also the dam of Helsinge, whose star offspring include unbeaten champion Black Caviar and All Too Hard, who won the Group I MRC Caulfield Guineas on Saturday.

Whether Scandiva can run as fast as the rest of her family remains to be seen, but from barrier three with Brad Rawiller to ride she'll be given every chance.
