Best On Breeding

Last year Nicobar clocked in at number 160 on the leading French sires table.

If the prizemoney won in two starts in Australia by his son Dunaden was factored in, Nicobar would have won the French Sires title by over $1 million. Little wonder the Melbourne Cup is proving such a magnet in Europe where a new industry is flourishing among bloodstock agents identifying suitable participants.

No need to look for book 1 Tattersalls October Yearling pedigrees, a young handicapper on the rise has suddenly found a new appreciative audience. Once unloved with limited market appeal they have become very expensive.

Peter Moody said trainers in Europe are quick to pigeon hole their horses. Dunaden seems to be a case in point.

He made 21 starts before making his first stakes start.

The 2010 Melbourne Cup hero Americain on the other hand has rarely raced outside of stakes company.

The striking son of Dynaformer has made 29 stakes appearances in his 32 start career.

Like Dunaden, Americain has done his fair share of travelling. Both have raced in France, England Germany and Hong Kong and Americain has also made four unsuccessful starts in North America.

Bred by Wertheimer family, Americain is out of the Prix de Malleret (G2) and the Prix Vanteaux (G3) winner America a daughter of 1991 European Horse of the Year and U.S. juvenile champion Arazi, who is enjoying retirement at Independent Stallions.

A half-sister to Listed winner Rose Indien (Crystal Glitters) and French Group 2 winner Majorien (Machiavellian), America is a daughter of stakes-placed Green Dancer mare Green Rosy herself a daughter of the Cornish Prince mare Round the Rosie, also the dam of US Grade 3 winner Rose Bouquet (Full Out) and French Listed stakes winner Big Sink Hope (Green Dancer).

Americain and Dunaden will face off in Saturday's $2.5 million BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m). They last met in last year's Melbourne Cup where Dunaden took the honours with Americain a fast finishing fourth.

The race looks at the mercy of the overseas raiders who have nine of the top ten in the handicaps.
