Mick Price trained three-year-old Hunger won out in a competitive renewal of the $100,000 Inglis Trophy over 1400m at Sale in Victoria on Sunday as part of the $5million Inglis Race Series.
Hunger ($100,000 2011 Classic, 3g Snitzel-Hollaback) was forced to work to sit outside the speedy Senglea Sun in the lead, before hitting the front into the straight at Sale before holding off strong run of Cool God (by God's Own) and Edgewood (by Churchill Downs), which made good ground from the back if the field after blowing the start.
The cleverly named gelding by Snitzel is now the winner of two from three starts, following his breakthrough victory last start at Ballarat earlier in the month.
Trainer Mick Price is well in the running for the $50,000 Trainer Bonus that is awarded to the trainer with the most wins each Inglis Race Series. Anthony Cummings, Gerald Ryan and Neville Layt currently head the table for 2011 yearling sale graduates with two wins each.
Bred by Perrin Legal, Hunger (pictured as a yearling) was purchased by Mick Price Racing for $100,000 from the draft of South Coast nursery Bell View Park Stud at the 2011 Inglis Sydney Classic Yearling Sale.
The Classic graduate has now won $70,000 in prizemoney for his connections, who will no doubt look to aim higher into the future with the lightly raced three-year-old.
This is the second year running that the valuable Inglis Trophy has been won by a graduate of the Sydney Classic Sale following the success of Upstaker last year.
Classic has developed a strong reputation of producing quality horses, with Sincero, Howmuchdoyouloveme, Secret Admirer and Manawanui all graduates of the great value sale.
The 2013 Inglis Sydney Classic Yearling Sale will be split over two books net year. The Summer Book on January 20 & 21 and the Winter Book on June 23.
Today's Sale Cup meeting also saw Inglis Bloodstock Consultant Stephanie Grentell auction an two-year-old colt by Eliza Park stallion God's Own from stakes winning Zeditave mare Happen for $20,000. The new owners would recoup 90% of his sale price if the colt can return next year and grab second place in the Inglis Trophy as fellow God's Own galloper Cool God did today.
Inglis have provided free entry to the Inglis Race Series for today's auctioned two-year-old, whose first chance at Inglis Race Series glory is the $250,000 Inglis Nursery (1000m) at Warwick Farm on Saturday December 22. The Nursery was one of five Inglis Race Series events to be recently upgraded to Restricted Listed status.
Connections next chance in the Inglis Race Series for three-year-olds is at Rosehill Gardens on November 24, where a $100,000 Inglis Bonus will be on offer to the winner of the three-year-old Benchmark 80 Hcp over 1500m should they be nominated to the Inglis Race Series.
