$1.4 Million Mares – Where Are They?

Audience interest in the whereabouts and performance of the most expensive broodmares sold at public auction in Australia has led to another story highlighting all of those in the popular price bracket of $1.4 million.

Members Joy (Hussonet (USA) – Was already the dam of brilliant G2 winner Pure Elation at the time of the sale and has an unnamed two year-old gelding by Toronado (IRE) and a yearling colt by Flying Artie.

First foal for new owners is a colt by I Am Invincible and she’s in foal to Zoustar.

Invincible Star (I Am Invincible) – Bought straight off the track last year and is in foal to Justify (USA).

Youngstar (High Chaparral (IRE) – Bought off the track this year.

Abbey Marie (Redoute’s Choice) – Bought straight off the track and sent to Japan for a mating with Deep Impact that produced a filly last spring at Arrowfield and now she is in foal to Dundeel.

Crystal Flute (Encosta de Lago) – Bought straight off the track and has had two named foals for new owners Art Glass (2f Sebring) fetched $570,000 at Inglis Easter and has raced twice and Meritable (yearling colt Snitzel) unraced. She has a weanling filly by Snitzel and is in foal to Pierro.

Estelle Collection (Stravinsky (USA) – Was already the dam of Australian Horse of the Year and five time G1 winner Lankan Rupee at time of sale.

Has produced two named foals for Coolmore, both winners headed by Group III placed Art Collection (Fastnet Rock) and her two yearlings that have been sold for them have returned nearly $2.5million.

She has a weanling filly by American Pharoah (USA), but missed to Piero last year. Her overall produce record is seven named foals, four to race all winners headed by Lankan Rupee and she is also the grand-dam of Kiwi stakes-winner Manhattan Street.

Cheeky Choice (Redoute’s Choice) – Bought in foal in her first season to Encosta de Lago and then lost that first foal after it was born. Her next foal by the same sire was a minor winner and she went back through the MM sale ring in 2010 when bought by Gerry Harvey’s Baramul Stud for $1,025,000.

She had four named foals for Baramul before her death in 2014, three raced and all were winners. Two of her daughters by More Than Ready (USA), More Mischievous and Bit of Cheek are both at Baramul Stud and going to the leading sires.

Private Steer (Danehill Dancer(IRE) -  Bought off the track in foal to Starcraft in her first season at stud. Produced three named foals for Coolmore before being sold privately to Fairway Thoroughbreds and had eight named foals in total before her death in 2016.

She had six foals to race and four of them won headed by Group III placed Second Bullet and one of her winning daughters Abbey Road is the dam of this season’s Group III placed 2YO Ticket to Ride.
