HK Rising Star for Deep Field

Tara Madgwick - Monday September 14

Deep Field has made a big impression in Hong Kong siring five winners from 11 runners and one of his most impressive winners last season was Sky Field, who resumed with a dominant win at Sha Tin on Sunday.

The Caspar Fownes trained four year old gelding closed out last season with a dazzling four length win at Sha Tin over 1200m in fast time and returned with a similar performance winning a Class Three sprint under Joao Moreira.

Sky Field showed an electrifying turn-of-foot in the straight to make a big statement for connections with this powerful length and a half victory.

He didn’t enjoy the easiest of passages but once clear in the straight he was able to stretch out and win with plenty in hand to cement his status as a leading contender for this season’s three-race Four-Year-Old Classic Series.

“He’s special, he really excites me in the morning and he’s a pleasure to work with because he’s still raw – there’s so much more,” Fownes said.

“I always knew he was something special from the early days, he had a bit of a wow factor but he’s not straightforward – he’s a horse that has problems. He’s always consistently got an issue here and there so we have to keep him sound is the key, if we can do that then he’ll do the rest.”

A $175,000 Karaka Book 1 purchase from the Trelawney Stud draft for Mr D Kwan, Sky Field is the fifth winner from Laravissante, a half-sister by O’Reilly to Hong Kong Group I winner The Duke.

Deep Field stands at a fee of $55,000 at Newgate Farm this spring.
