Busiest Sires in Britain and Ireland for 2020

Tara Madgwick - Monday November 2

Statistics released by Weatherbys highlighting the busiest sires for Britain and Ireland in 2020 features a list of the Top 20 flat sires including five stallions standing in Australia this spring.

Topping the list having covered 250 mares is Coolmore’s Champion 2YO and 3YO Miler Churchill (IRE), whose first NH bred yearlings have sold particularly well at European sales this year  while his first Australian bred offspring are set to hit our sales in 2021.

Coolmore first season horses Magna Grecia (IRE) and Calyx (GB) also appear on the list along with Saxon Warrior (Jpn) and they along with Churchill are currently at their Jerry’s Plains Australian headquarters covering their first Australian mares.

Darley newcomer Blue Point (IRE) is also prominent on the list covering 198 mares and the brilliant Royal Ascot winning son of Shamardal is at Darley Victoria covering his first Australian mares this spring.

Also on the list is Ten Sovereigns (IRE), No Nay Never's Group I winning son currently at Valachi Downs in New Zealand.

Darley’s champion sire Dubawi, now 18 years old, was just outside the Top 20 busiest sires covering 155 mares, while Coolmore’s evergreen champion sire Galileo covered 120 mares at age 22.

For those wondering about Inns of Court, who was second on the list covering 218 mares, he’s a Group II winning sprinter by Invincible Spirit standing at Tally Ho Stud in Ireland at a fee of 7,500 euros.

Tally Ho Stud is home to outstanding sire Kodiac, the half-brother by Danehill to Invincible Spirit who rose from the bargain basement to stand at a fee of 65,000 euros in 2020.

They also stand Mehmas, another bargain priced sire, that will finish 2020 as the Champion First Crop Sire for GB and Ireland having produced an astonishing 42 first crop winners headed by Group I winner Supremacy and nine other stakes horses.
