Shocking Stayer Wins Mornington Cup Prelude

Tara Madgwick - Saturday February 20

Melbourne Cup winner Shocking has given us some quality stayers as a sire and Defibrillate is his latest staying star to emerge, racking up his ninth win from 13 starts when taking out the Listed $150,000 MRC Mornington Cup Prelude (2000m) at Caulfield on Saturday.

Part-owner and co-breeder Graham Richardson transferred Defibrillate from New Zealand into the stable of Patrick Payne in 2019 and the move has proven a good one.

The six year-old gelding has blossomed in recent months and has now won his past four starts in a row culminating in a determined long neck win on Saturday over import San Huberto (USA).

“He’s a slow maturing type, but he keeps showing us he’s improving all the time,” said winning rider Billy Egan.

Not offered for sale, Defibrillate is a half-brother to stakes-winner Italian Princess and is the bets of four winners from Our Chickaroonie, who comes from the family of Champion NZ 2YO Sheralee.

Now a two time stakes-winner, Defibrillate is one of 12 stakes-winners for Rich Hill Stud’s Shocking.
