Flying Spur's Boom Time Earns Second Stakes Win

Mark Smith - Saturday February 25

Nearly two years after earning his first stakes win in the Listed Melvista Stakes at Ascot, Flying Spur entire Boom Time earned a second black-type success in Saturday's Listed Ladbrokes Mornington Cup Prelude (2000m) at Caulfield.

Ridden by Mark Zahra for trainer's David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig, Boom Time wore down his more favoured stablemate Pilote d"Essai before holding the challenge of Goldstream (ITY) (Martino Alonso) by a long-neck with Pilote d"Essai (GB) (Oasis Dream) a half-length back in third. Formerly trained in Perth by Trevor Andrews, Boom Time has been a consistent performer for Lindsay Park.

He won three in a row at Flemington (twice) and Moonee Valley before finishing fifth in the $1 Magic Millions Trophy at his most recent start.

His overall record stands at 5 wins, 2 seconds and 5 thirds from 23 starts with earnings of $419,125.

"We underrated him a little bit," David Hayes said.

"He just failed at the Gold Coast. His form before that had been impeccable.

"His stablemate got a nice soft lead in front and with the benefit of a run I thought he might prove a bit too sharp but obviously Boom Time is a pretty good horse on his day.

Hayes said tthe $1.5 million Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington on March 11 may come into reckoning.

We might get a bit a bit more ambitious and go for the Australian Cup because he is still an entire from that fantastic Scandinavia family, he got a stallions pedigree."

Consigned to the 2013 Magic Millions Perth Yearling sale, Boom Time failed to make his $80,000 reserve and races for owner-breeder Kim Loxton's Ferrari Racing & Breeding.

Loxton purchased Boom Time's dam Bit Of A Ride (Snippets) after she won a maiden at Wyong for Allan Denham in March 2002.

She was sent to Neville Parnham, for whom she added wins at Ascot, Belmont, Pinjarra and Kalgoorlie.

She retired with a record of 7 wins and 3 placed from 32 starts but that was a side note to a pedigree that was about to go through the stratosphere.

Bit Of A Ride is a three-quarter sister to Group II BTC Cup winner Scandinavia the dam of Magnus, Scandiva, Willanda and Arctic Flight as well as the unraced Helsinge the dam of Black Caviar and All Too Hard.

Bit Of A Ride has a 2yo colt by the Exceed And Excel stallion Pitleco but missed to that stallion for two years before being covered by All American last spring.
