Eye-Catching Debut Winner for Capitalist

Tara Madgwick - Friday April 9

Fresh from siring not one, but two individual million dollar yearlings at Inglis Easter this week, Newgate Farm’s Capitalist also added a ninth winner to his tally with a debut victory on Friday for Capital Reign.

Trained by Gary Portelli, Capital Reign was dispatched to Canberra for an all aged maiden over 1000m and showed terrific speed to lead for home and despite racing greenly over the concluding stages was too good in winning by two and a half lengths.

Reign was a bargain $30,000 Inglis Classic purchase from the Newgate draft for Elite Thoroughbreds with his big group of owners sure to have plenty of fun with the talented gelding going forward.

Capital Reign as a yearling

Bred by SF Bloodstock and partners, Capital Reign is the first foal of Group III winning Snitzel mare Elle Lou, who unfortunately died last year after having only one other foal, a colt by I Am Invincible.

Capital Reign is the ninth winner – eight in Australia and one in NZ – for Capitalist, who covered his biggest ever book last year of 238 mares at a slightly reduced fee of $44,000, down from $55,000 in his first three seasons.

Inglis Easter and those million dollar yearlings aside, Capitalist has had a phenomenally good year across all sales with over 90 yearlings selling at an average $219,193.
