G1 Success for Exceed and Excel as Sire of Sires

Tara Madgwick - Friday August 20

Exceed and Excel has several very high profile sons at stud here this spring in Bivouac. Microphone and Exceedance, the champion sire featuring overnight as a sire of sires when his progressive son Bungle Inthejungle sired three year-old filly Winter Power to win the Group I Nunthorpe Stakes (5f) at York.

Trained by Tim Easterby, Winter Power was a busy girl last season at two starting nine times winning her two final starts of the year in Listed and Group III races.

This year, Winter Power has been in top form barring a ninth place finish in the Group I King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot and came into this race as a last start winner.

She scored a length and a quarter win under Silvestre de Sousa taking her overall record to seven wins and two placings from 13 starts.

“She's an incredible filly. She just came right for the day. I wasn't worried about the opposition. You just try and get your horse to the race fit, healthy and well. The jockey has to be chilled, too. Everything went to plan. Winter Power relaxes so well in her races now. She just switched off,” said Tim Easterby.

Purchased for 90,000 euros at the Goffs Orby Yearling Sale by SackvilleDonald, Winter Power is a half-sister to stakes-winner Hay Chewed and stakes-placed Flying Sparkle from good producer Titian Saga.

She is the first Group I winner among six stakes-winner for Bungle Inthejungle, a Group III winning son of Exceed and Excel that stands at Rathasker Stud at a fee of 8,000 euros.
