Victorian-Based Stallions Setting the Pace

Mark Smith - Sunday October 24

If you are a Victorian breeder, this is a good-looking table of the current frontrunners for Champion Sire.

Despite the defection of Street Boss (USA) to the Hunter Valley, Victorian-based farms house four of the top ten, including the 1-2, Nicconi and Shamus Award, who both kicked off their careers as stablemates at the historic Widden Stud.

It seems Rosemont Stud has the Midas touch. For them, everything is turning to gold with Shamus Award’s Incentivise looking as if nothing is beyond him, while State Of Rest (IRE) made the trip from Ireland to add to the fortunes of Starspangledbanner.

Perennial frontrunners Snitzel and I Am Invincible are lurking.

Snitzel, in particular, has made a brilliant start to the season. None come close to his eight stakes-winners to date, led by the Group 1 Golden Rose winner in The Congo, Group 1 Thousand Guineas winner Yearning and Group 1 Moir Stakes winner Wid Ruler.

A big shout out to two New Zealand stalwarts in Cambridge Stud’s sadly missed Tavistock and Waikato Stud’s phenomenon Savabeel.

They both look to have major players over the Flemington Spring Carnival.
