Snitzel – Still the One

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday June 28

Arrowfield Stud’s multiple champion sire Snitzel is turning 20 this year and is still at the very top of his game having sired more Australian stakes-winners this season than any other sire, so let’s take a look at the mares he covered last spring.

Snitzel

Priced at $165,000 last year and up to $220,000 this year, Snitzel is always a popular choice for commercial breeders looking to get the big dollars in the sale ring and give a young mare the best possible opportunity of success.

His book of 165 mares last year featured over 50 stakes-winners and the dams of over 50 stakes-winners, so the quality is certainly top class, but the most interesting aspect about his book was the number of imported mares from the Northern Hemisphere.

He covered 31 mares bred in a variety of countries with Japan the most prevalent with 11 mares coming from that region which has delivered plenty of success for Arrowfield Stud in the past.

Snitzel has sired 18 Group I winners in his stellar career, but never ever an Oaks or Derby winner, however the pedigrees of some of these mares would suggest that elusive goal may yet be achieved.
