Fighting Sun Off The Mark

Mark Smith - Saturday January 13

Platinum Mam'selle improved from a career debut second to the highly-regarded Sword Of Osman at Awapuni last month, to open her winning account in Saturday's Kilbirnie Sports Premier (1200m) at Trentham to credit Sun Stud's Fighting Sun with his first winner.

Given plenty of time to find her feet by Mark Du Plessis, Platinum Mam'selle finished strongly to defeat Boy Next Door (Showcasing) by a short-neck with King Louis (Equiano) a length and a quarter back in third. (photo Trish Dunell )

Trainer Lisa Latta said they will step the daughter of Fighting Sun up to Group company next and believes she can be a genuine contender for the Group 1 Courtesy Ford Manawatu Sires' Produce Stakes (1400m) at Awapuni in the autumn according to NZ Racing Desk.

"We'll look at going to a nice Group race now, probably the one at New Plymouth (the Group III Phoenix Park 2YO Classic (1200m) on February 3)," Latta said.

"She learned a lot from her first start, she just keeps getting better."

Rider Mark Du Plessis also believes the filly is destined for better things.

"She did things well today and there's a lot of upside to her," he said. "She's going to make a lovely three-year-old and she'll be much better over further.

"There was a nice, genuine speed and she picked up well when I asked her to go."

Purchased by Beamish Bloodstock for $80,000 out of the Woodside Park draft at the 2017 Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale, Platinum Mam'selle (pictured as a yearling ) races for major stable clients Neville McAlister and Lincoln Farms.

She is the second foal of the winning Redoute's Choice mare Miss Fascination a daughter of the Zafonic mare Bibury Flying who won stakes races at Newbury and The Curragh.

A son of Northern Meteor, Fighting Sun was unbeaten in two starts, including the Listed Canonbury Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill, before an injury ended his career. He retired to Sun Stud in Victoria where he has been very popular.

Fighting Sun covered 143 mares in 2017 at a fee of $13,750.
