Movers and Shakers

Tara Madgwick - Monday November 12
The end of the Flemington Carnival is a good time to take stock of the sire tables and while reigning champion sire Snitzel, courtesy of his Everest success with Redzel, has an unassailable lead on the Australian General Sires List, the two and three year-old sires lists present a much more diverse picture.

3YO Sires

Redoute's ChoiceSnitzel's sire, the legendary Arrowfield favourite Redoute's Choice sits atop the three year-old sires list with his absolutely outstanding colt The Autum Sun, his star performer. Winner of the Group I ATC Golden Rose and MRC Caulfield Guineas, The Autumn Sun will eventually retire to his birthplace at Arrowfield Stud.

Zoustar is the big mover here, zooming into second place following a great spring that has seen him with the Group I trifecta in the VRC Coolmore Stud Stakes – Sunlight, Zousain and Lean Mean Machine - and another new Group III winner in Charge. Interestingly, this Widden Stud based son of Northern Meteor is from a daughter of Redoute's Choice.

Aquis Farm's Domesday shot into the list with his Victoria Derby winning son Extra Brut, but that was no fluke as he is actually the third Derby winner for this under-rated son of Red Ransom (USA) that consistently produces Group I class horses. Domesday traces in tail female line to Best in Show, who is also the fourth dam of Redoute's Choice.

2YO Sires

I Am InvincibleYarraman Park's I Am Invincible has made a fast start with three winners and all of them are stakes-winners – Catch Me, Espaaniyah and Vinicunca. He's always promised to win a Champion 2YO Sire title and maybe this will be his season.

Lyndhurst Stud's first season horse Better Than Ready already has three winners on the board which is two more than any of his other first season rivals, so he's sitting pretty heading into the 2019 yearling sale season.

A fast precocious stakes-winning son of More Than Ready (USA), Better Than Ready comes from a very fast female family going back to former star 2YO Rancher, so to see him jump quickly into stride as a sire is hardly a surprise.

Coolmore's champion sire Fastnet Rock had the Champion 2YO in New Zealand last season in Avantage and may have some nice juveniles again this season if blue-blooded debut metro winners Anaheed and Pelican are any indication.
