Epaulette's Cossetot Showcases Godolphin in Tasmania

Mark Smith - Friday February 8

The choice of the consistent gelding Cossetot to be Godolphin's first representative in Tasmania paid off big-time when the son of Epaulette scored a dominant win in Friday's $150,000 Listed Tasmanian Derby (2200m) at Hobart.

With Craig Newitt in the saddle, was settled just worse than midfield in a ground-saving ride.

Liam Riordan made a lightning move on Twilight Run before the turn to set up a commanding lead coming into the straight. With the field heading to the centre of the track, Newitt received a saloon passage through and quickly got the better of Twilight Run to win by one and a quarter lengths from Glass Warrior (Glass Harmonium) who edged out the tiring Twilight Run (Akeed Mofeed) by a half-length.

"It was a great effort by the horse, he only arrived here yesterday morning. It was a great effort and great for the stable," Godolphin representative Nacim Dilmi told Sky Racing.

"He's been a bit of a slow learner, but this was only his fifth start. He is a work in progress but has been going the right way. The way he raced last start we were very confident he would handle the distance today.

"It was Vin Cox's idea to bring horses here and hopefully find the right horses."

A winner at Canterbury and Hawkesbury, Cossetot came into the race off a second-place finish over 1550m at Canterbury on January 23.

The James Cummings-trained gelding advances his record to 3 wins and 1 second from 5 starts with earnings of $155,665.

From a reliable old Woodland family, Cossetot is the sixth winner from seven to race out of the unraced Canny Lad mare Ouachita who is the dam of this season's promising 2yo filly Kiamichi (Sidestep).

Ouachita is a sister to Group 1 VRC Sires' Produce Stakes winner Preserve and Listed winner Rio Osa and a half-sister to Group 1 STC Golden Rose winner Denman.

Preserve is the dam of the promising young WA first season sire Safeguard (Exceed And Excel).

After slipping in 2016, Ouachita had an Animal Kingdom (USA) foal last spring.

Cossetot becomes the fifth stakes-winner from the first crop of Epaulette who covered 87 mares at Darley Stud last spring at a fee of $27500.
